All of these restaurants in Ambergris Caye were first introduced to me by locals and 100% of the time the food went above and beyond my expectations. I was so used to eating at the same spots that were introduced to me when I was a tourist or by other tourists, but that quickly got expensive.
Many of these restaurants in Ambergris Caye do not have a proper website, but rather a Facebook page or nothing at all. Take the trek through town to find it… you’ll be glad you did!
1. La Mulata Backyaad Eatery – Recommended Pick: Their Dish of the Day.
- From the moment you step into this hidden gem, you’ll be greeted by Ms. Hilda, the traditional Belizean cook behind the delicious dishes. She’ll usually sit with you and chat for a bit when you enter before telling you about the daily specials. The menu changes regularly and features popular local food. Dig into whatever she recommends, and you’ll leave with a full, happy belly!

2. Dixie’s Shakes – Recommended Pick: Mango Smoothie
- If you’re in Belize during mango season (May-June) stop by Dixie’s stand on Front Street for a creamy, flavorful mango smoothie. Made with fresh mangos, ice, and condensed milk, this refreshing drink (more like a dessert) will be sure to satisfy any sweet tooth you may have!

Whether you’re starving after a trip on the water taxi or famished after a late night out, satisfy your cravings at the food stands in Central Park.
- The first one in the center of the park, closest to the road, serves one of the best burritos in town. Fill it with your favorite meat or lobster (when in season) and your stomach will be sure to thank you.

4. Rosy’s Deli –Recommended Pick: Pork Tacos on Flour Tortillas
- For years,I would pass this deli regularly while heading to the bridge on Laguna Drive and never noticed it – most likely because I was always eyeing the colorful fruits at Gotay’s Fruit Stand. A local introduced me to this deli for breakfast tacos, and WOW, you will never go anywhere else for your morning tacos. Add a little bit of spice and you’ll experience a delicious explosion of flavor in your mouth.

The owner, Julia, is a proud Garifuna who is eager to share her food and culture with you. In one of the most energizing restaurants in Ambergris Caye, you are surrounded by bright colors and music that will make you want to move your hips. If you’re lucky, you’ll be there when there is live Garifuna music and you’ll be invited to join in on the dancing!
